Sara Giarola

Dr Sara Giarola is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Brescia and adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic of Milan. She was awarded a Marie Curie Research Fellowship on the evaluation of mutual dependencies of uncertainties in climate economic models using machine learning-based emulators. She is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Chemical Engineering Department of Imperial College London.

She is a macro-energy system modeller with a focus on the multiscale nexus between engineering innovation, and human behaviour at the micro-level and economic and environmental consequences of technology adoption at the macro-level.. She was the lead developer of a novel agent-based energy systems model (MUSE, the ModUlar energy Systems Simulation Environment).

Her interests are in optimisation techniques and machine learning. Her research focuses on  the modelling and analysis of macro-economic models, bioenergy and renewable uptake, supply chains, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage, direct air capture, and digitalisation.

Since 2017, she has participated in the Energy Modelling Forum and Integrated Assessment Modelling Consortium. In the area of energy systems modelling and optimisation, she authored and co-authored more than 40 journal articles and 3 book chapters.
