TITLE: Investigating equivalent black carbon (eBC) in an urban environment: spatial analysis and personal exposure of school-age children in Milan

Speaker: Luca Boniardi, Department of Clinical Sciences and Community HealthUniversity of Milan

Abstract:
Air pollution is a global threat to public health, especially if considering susceptible populations, such as children. Among others, equivalent black carbon (eBC) is a primary air pollutant strictly linked with fossil fuels combustion, i.e, one of the main sources of air pollution in the urban environment. Besides, it represents a valuable indicator of adverse health effects related to airborne particles and it is recognized as an important climate forcing agent. The aim of this contribution is presenting the results of a three-year participatory-based research focused on both spatial and temporal distribution of eBC starting from a school catchment area of the Municipality of Milan, as well as an analysis of the personal exposure of children aged 8-10 years.
