Python for Power System Analysis - Europe

A Sector-Coupled Open Optimisation Model of the European Energy System

PyPSA-Eur is an open-source model for optimizing and analyzing the European energy system. It is built on thePyPSA (Python for Power System Analysis) framework and includes detailed representations of demand and supplyfor all energy sectors across Europe.

Key features of PyPSA-Eur:

  • Comprehensive Dataset: Includes data for European countries, such as renewable energy potentials, electricitygrids, and demand profiles.
  • Sector Coupling: Simulates interactions across multiple sectors such as electricity, heating, industry, aviation, maritime, and transport systems.
  • Scalability: Enables optimization of energy systems at varying scales, with customizable numbers of nodes and timesteps, down to hourly resolution.
  • Flexibility: Facilitates in-depth analyses of renewable energy integration, grid expansion, and decarbonizationpathways.

PyPSA-Eur is widely used in academic and policy research to evaluate pathways for achieving a sustainable, low-carbon energy system in Europe (paper1, paper2, paper3).

It is currently maintained by the Department of Digital Transformation in Energy Systems at the Technische Universität Berlin.
