We have the tools and know-how

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published the next major assessment of climate policy, the report “Mitigating Climate Change“, as the third volume of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6).

Three Authors from the European Institute on Economics and the Environment were specifically contributing to these chapters:

Chapter 1: Introduction and Framing, Valentina Bosetti

Chapter 3 Mitigation pathways compatible with long-term goals, Massimo Tavoni

Chapter 16: Innovation, technology development and transfer, Elena Verdolini

After the publication, the European Institute on Economics and the Environment organized a private event with the aim to provide an opportunity to discuss some of the main findings directly with the three scientists who contributed to its drafting. The report is the most comprehensive and up-to-date review of scientific knowledge on climate change for governments, the international scientific community and world public opinion.

In particular, the story will focus on some of the new findings of IPCC Working Group III, related to climate change mitigation, which can be achieved by limiting or preventing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing activities that remove these gases from the atmosphere. Working Group III addresses all aspects of mitigation, including technical feasibility, costs and enabling conditions that would allow measures to be taken. Synergies and trade-offs with adaptation measures are of increasing interest, as are co-benefits, risks and links to sustainable development.

The team of scientists, of which the three speakers are members, provides both a short-term perspective relevant to decision-makers in governments and businesses and a long-term perspective that helps to understand how to achieve the ambitious climate policy goals.
